I have finished my visual aids for the hymn "How Firm a Foundation" (LDS Hymnal, #85). Like last month, I'm posting a link to them here. Feel free to use any of the picture posted here, all I ask is that you link to the posts if you post the pictures elsewhere and that you not use any of these visual aids for any reason other than to teach the songs/hymns that they coincide with.
In an effort this year to not only teach the songs, but the message, I am starting this week with a lesson on construction. I am bringing in different materials (like a deck of cards, foam cups, and bricks) and discussing with them how a house would hold up in a storm if made by each material. I will ask for suggestions from the children on what other materials may be good or bad in making a house.
After this, I will liken the object lesson to our lives and demonstrate how we have to have our foundation rooted in the Savior and his gospel or we may tumble like our "houses" did.
I am taping a small version of the pictures in the visual aids to each brick (this week, just the first verse) and as we review the lines, we'll stack the bricks up on top of each other.
I am confident that this will teach them not only the words of the songs, but help them remember the message behind it. I am trying to be diligent in this because of a realization that these songs will very likely stick with them for the rest of their lives. I want them to understand at a young age the messages and not just mindlessly sing a tune. I am reminded in my own life of times when a song or hymn has helped me in one way or another and I hope to pass this on to them.
Hope some of this info helps any of you! Again, feel free to contact me if you want these sent to you via email, etc.

You are so clever Julie I love the idea and I think your message will work out well and be remember which is the most important part. It is sometimes hard to reach and the kids and even harder to have them remember that you learned anything at all. Sometimes I felt like the kids were looking at me like was I here last week?
