My Eternal Family

Sorry, no visual aids for you yet, but there is a reason for that,
so keep reading!

Each year I choose one song for the children to make their own visual aids for. This year I decided to make "My Eternal Family" the song because it comes from the Primary Outline and so it has probably not been heard by any of them. Having them create the visual aids not only gives them something of their own to look at each week, but it also helps them own the song on a more personal level. I do this early on in the year, so they have more time to see their creations as we continue to learn the song throughout the year.

Here's what to do:
  1. Divide the children into groups (it's best to have a teacher or leader with each group if possible) and give them a section of the song to draw out. Tell each group that this is their phrase, not only to draw out, but to memorize for the time being.

  2. Provide paper, poster board, etc. and markers or crayons. You can even provide pictures cut from magazines, ribbons, construction paper, scissors and glue, whatever you've got and you want to let them use.

  3. Set them loose! You can provide suggestions if they need ideas, but it's best to have them work it out on their own.

  4. One rule: Everyone gets a chance to draw something, even if it's just a scribble or to write their name on it somewhere.

  5. When finished, give each group a chance to show what they drew and how it correlates with the phrase given to them.

You may not want to use this song. It's best to do this with a song that you feel they may have more difficulty learning.

When we are done doing this in our ward, I will post pix of them here for you to see so you get the idea. Remember to have fun with it!

That sounds like a really good way for the kids to learn a new song. Good for you.
