Trashion

In digging out all of our winter clothes (winter.... *sob, sob*), I have noticed several things

  1. The girls have WAY too many clothes.

  2. What they DO have is too small or lacking the best condition.

  3. They don't need that many things since they wear a uniform to school.

  4. There are a few things that they DO need, like church dresses.

  5. I do not have the money to buy them all new wardrobes.
I was staring at all of these clothes when a realization hit me... I have yards and yards of fabric here, maybe I could make something useful outta them! So, I have decided to resurrect a long dead skill I remember vaguely having... sewing.

Surprisingly, the internet is full of ideas for recycling clothes and making them into other stuff. "TRASHION" as it was frequently called. Since I haven't done anything more than a basic stitch in years, not all of the ideas were within the realm of my capabilities. But, I did finally come up with one idea to give Cora a new dress.

Here is what I had:

  • An plain red t-shirt (like a million others that she has) that is in good condition and still fits

  • Old sun dresses that would be way too short for her now, even if it were warmer weather

I ended up taking the top off the sundress and sewing the bottom of it to the bottom of the t-shirt. I didn't have to use both dresses, but I did use the bigger one to make sure that it went all the way around the bottom of the shirt and was long. The dresses buttoned up the back so I left that feature and made the buttons go in the back once again (not that I ever expect to use them but they make it look nice).

Here is what I ended up with:

Luckily, she loves it! It's nice enough to wear to church, but informal enough to play in too. It is something she should be able to wear for quite a while.

I also did a new dress for Carey (which I forgot to take pictures of) using the same concept of top of one dress (that I hated) and swapping it with the bottom of another one (that I liked).

I am pretty proud of myself! Now, I'm trying to figure out some more ideas to "convert" the couple baskets of clothes I have left. I have thought of some bags, scripture carriers, etc.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!!

That was very clever and very brave. I am crafty but I find myself feeling like I don't know what going on when I'm sewing. I would love to be awesome at sewing and make the many things I have running through my head. Maybe I'll find time to learn how to sew one of these days after all that would be a very useful skill.
