This morning the repair guy came again to replace the lock, which was thankfully the problem. But as it turns out, the piece is not broken out of it's own accord.

Broke off and somehow got in the space above it...
And ended up here...
Through the back of the locking mechanism!
I have no idea how it got that way, but I have a feeling a certain toddler, or perhaps a certain teenager, was involved. (The suspects are still under investigation... sorry I can't discuss the case with the media at this time.)
In any case, the repair guy told me that this washer will last me 20 years, providing we don't overstuff the thing (uuuummmm..... I'd NEVER do that.... :P).

The important thing to focus on here is that your washer is functional again and you can wash that twelve story pile of clothing that has built up in the last day and a half!
